Introduction
- Location: Situated in the City Palace of Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.
- Dedicated to: Govind Dev Ji (Krishna) and his consort Radha.
- Historical Significance:
- The deities were brought from Vrindavan by Raja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur.
- The temple is one of the most sacred and important temples for Gaudiya Vaishnavism devotees.
Puranic Significance:
- Establishment: The temple was built in 1735 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh II.
- Deity: The central deity is Lord Krishna in the form of Govind Dev Ji, a deity worshipped by the Amber Kachawaha Dynasty.
- Legend of Bajrakrit:
- The idol is called “Bajrakrit”, created by Bajranabh, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna.
- At around age 13, Bajranabh asked Krishna’s grandmother to describe Lord Krishna’s appearance. Based on her description, Bajranabh crafted three images:
- Madan Mohan Ji: Resembling Krishna’s feet.
- Gopinath Ji: Resembling Krishna’s chest.
- Govind Dev Ji: Resembling Krishna’s face.
- Over time, these sacred images were lost, but about 500 years ago, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu instructed Sri Rupa Goswami to excavate the image of Govinda, which had been hidden to protect it from invaders.
- Vedānta-ācārya Śrīla Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa:
- At the temple, Śrīla Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa began writing the Govinda-bhasya, a commentary on the Brahma Sutras, which was inspired by Govind Dev Ji in his dreams.
- The commentary played a crucial role in the success of the Gaudiya Vaishnavism tradition, particularly after Vidyābhūṣaṇa’s victory in the Shastrartha (debate) at Galtaji in Jaipur.
- Significance for Vaishnavas:
- The Radha Govind Dev Ji Temple is one of the most revered temples for Vaishnavas outside Vrindavan.
- Daily Rituals:
- Aartis and Bhog are offered seven times a day, and the deity is revealed for Darshan.
- Thousands of devotees visit the temple daily, with a larger influx during Janmashtami.
