Introduction

Hooli Panchalingeshwar Temple is in the Hooli village, Belgaum district in North Karnataka. It is located at a distance nine kilometers from Saundatti, a major pilgrimage center with many ruins temples.

Puranic Significance

The temple is built during the capital of the Rattas; 12th century. The architecture of Hooli Panchalingeshwar Temple is to be adored.

Special Features

The Panchalingeshwara Temple, as its name suggests, houses five deities represented by five Lingas. The temple faces east, with two sanctums facing north and south, and the remaining three facing east. The temple’s walls and pillars are relatively plain, lacking intricate decorative art. One notable feature of this temple is its sloping canopy, which serves to protect it from heavy rainfall. The main construction material used in the temple is sandstone blocks.

The temple also features a spacious pillared hall with Suknasi (seating platforms) surrounding it. The entrance to the temple is flanked by two balustrades adorned with elephant murals. The sanctums are located on the right-hand side. While the walls of the temple are simple, the Shikharas (spires) are complex and artistically designed.

Hooli is home to several temples, most of which exhibit Chalukyan-style architecture. Among these temples, the Panchalingeshwara Temple is the most famous in Hooli. In addition to this shrine, Hooli boasts other notable temples such as the Hooli Sangameshwara Ajjanavaru Temple, Kashi Vishwanatha Temple, Madaneshwara Temple, Andhakeshwara Temple, Suryanarayana Temple, Kalmeshwara Temple, Tarkeshwara Temple, and Bhavanishankara Temple, each contributing to the rich religious and architectural heritage of the area.
