Introduction
Harichandrapuram Mayuranathar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Harichandrapuram town, Koothanallur circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. Harichandrapuram is the next stop after crossing Vadapadhimangalam from Koothanallur. The temple is located on the upper bank of the large pond facing east. Here the Presiding deity is called as Mayuranathar and Mother is called as Mangalambigai.
Puranic Significance
Harichandrapuram town is called the moonlit place. Because the peacock called Mayuram was worshiped here, the god named Mayuranath has a sanctuary towards the east and the goddess towards the south. There is a lofty mandapam in front of the Lord’s shrine and Nandi Mandapam is situated outside it.
There is Vinayagar sanctum in Prakaram and a large and beautiful Muruga sanctum in the northwest. Sandesar is in the usual place. Lord – Mayuranathar – Mangalambikai in the east side. The temple we see now must be a new temple built in recent years, outside the temple there are lingamurthys and a broken Murugan idol. The new temple is believed to be 300 years old.
