Puranic Significance:

  • The Ghumli Ganesh Temple is considered the oldest temple in Gujarat, and it is dedicated to Lord Ganesha.
  • The temple was built in the 10th century AD.
  • Ghumli was once the capital of the Saindhava dynasty, which ruled western Saurashtra from the mid-eighth century to the mid-tenth century.
  • Various historical records mention different names for Ghumli, which gradually evolved into “Ghumli.”
  • The temple is now in a dilapidated condition and is devoid of any notable carvings on its outer walls.

Historical Background:

  • Ghumli was declared the second capital by the Jethwa dynasty in 1220 when Rana Shiyaji, who took the title of Rana of Ghumli, shifted the capital from Shrinagar. Ghumli served as their capital until 1313.
  • In 1313, Rana Bhanji Jethwa was defeated in battle and fled Ghumli, relocating to Ranpur.
  • The temple was destroyed when Ghumli was sacked during Jadeja Jam Barmaniyaji’s attack in 1313, which resulted in the complete destruction of Ghumli.
