Introduction
- Location: The Nageshvara Temple, also known as Nageshwar Mahadev, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is located in Dwarka, Gujarat, India.
- Significance: The temple is considered one of the holiest shrines of Lord Shiva, attracting thousands of pilgrims throughout the year.
Puranic Significance:
- Shiva Purana Story:
- In the Shiva Purana, Brahma (the Creator) and Vishnu (the Preserver) once had a disagreement regarding their supremacy. To settle the dispute, Shiva manifested as an immeasurable pillar of light, known as the Jyotirlinga.
- Brahma and Vishnu separated to find the ends of the pillar. Brahma lied that he had found the upper end, while Vishnu admitted he hadn’t found the lower end. As a result, Shiva appeared as a second Jyotirlinga and cursed Brahma, stating that he would have no place in ceremonies.
- The Jyotirlinga symbolizes the infinite, indivisible reality of Shiva.
- Nageshvara Jyotirlinga is located in Darukavana, a sacred forest in Gujarat, mentioned in various Indian epics such as Kamyakavana, Dvaitavana, and Dandakavana.
- Legend of Nageshvara:
- Daruk, a demon, attacked and imprisoned Supriya, a devotee of Shiva, along with many others in his underwater city of Darukavana (inhabited by demons and sea serpents). Supriya’s chants to Shiva summoned the deity, who vanquished the demon.
- Daruka, the wife of the demon, worshiped Mata Parvati to gain powers, and Parvati transformed the forest into Darukavana, which she moved into the sea.
- Supriya established a Shiva Lingam in the sea, where the chanting of “Om Namah Shivaya” led to the defeat of Daruk and his demons.
- The lingam created by Supriya became known as Nagesha, and the Nageshvara Jyotirlinga was formed. The goddess Parvati is also worshiped as Nageshwari.
- Shiva vowed to guide the path of those who worship him at this sacred site.
Festivals:
- Maha Shivaratri is one of the major festivals celebrated at the Nageshvara Temple.
