Introduction

  • Gangeshwar Mahadev Temple, also known as Gangeshwar Mahadev or Gangeshwar Temple, is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
  • Located on the seashore of Fudam Village, 3 km from Diu, near Gujarat.
  • The temple is set on the Arabian Sea, offering a unique view.
  • It is a cave temple situated among rocks on the seashore.
  • Inside the cave, idols of Lord Ganesha, Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Lakshmi can be seen.
  • The temple’s main feature is the five Shiva Lingas of different sizes, submerged in the sea during high tide and visible during low tide.
  • A Seshanag is carved above the rock to guard the Shiva Linga.
  • The temple is also referred to as the “Seashore Temple” due to its location.

Puranic Significance

  • The temple is believed to be 5000 years old.
  • The five Pandava brothers (Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva) installed the five Shiva Lingas while in exile during the Mahabharata period.
  • The name “Gangeshwar” is derived from “Ganga” and “Ishwar,” meaning “Lord of Ganga.”
  • Ganga is associated with Lord Shiva, as he held her waters in his jata (matted hair) to prevent the earth from being flooded, hence earning the name Gangadhar or Gangeshwar.

  • The five Shiva Lingas were installed by the Pandava brothers, each reflecting their individual sizes.
  • Bhima, being the strongest, installed the largest Shiva Linga.
