Introduction
- Location: The Agastheeshwarar Temple is situated in Dharapuram taluk in Tirupur District, Tamil Nadu, India.
- Significance: This ancient Shiva temple is believed to be more than 1000 years old and is renowned for its ability to help devotees resolve problems through prayer and devotion.
Puranic Significance:
- Legend of Agastya and the Lingam:
- According to the legend, when Lord Shiva married Parvati at Mount Kailash, the north direction bowed down and the south direction rose up, disrupting the balance of the world.
- To restore balance, Shiva instructed Agastya to install lingams in various places. When Agastya arrived at the Amaravati River, he embedded a lingam in the sand, which later became known as Agasteeswarar.
- Pandavas’ Connection:
- It is believed that the Pandavas spent a year here, making the temple even more sacred.
- The Sand Lingam Miracle:
- The temple houses a sand lingam in which, before the abhishekam (ritual bathing), a golden frog made of mud emerges from the lingam.
- Though Agastya initially intended to consecrate a lingam brought from Kasi (Varanasi), he was unable to do so. Instead, he poured water from the Amaravati River over the sand to embed the lingam, making it a significant and miraculous site.
- Worship and Beliefs:
- Devotees believe that praying at this temple helps resolve problems in various aspects of life, including legal matters, removal of obstacles, completion of studies, and finding employment.
- Panchalinga Worship:
- Five lingams representing the five elements—earth, water, fire, air, and space—are consecrated in the same shrine.
- Worshipping these Panchalingas during Shivaratri and Pradosha nights brings success in life.
- Perumal’s Role:
- At the temple entrance, Sri Devi, Bhu Devi, and Venkata Ramanaswami are enshrined, offering blessings to alleviate afflictions before entering the main shrine of Agasteeswarar, where Lord Vishnu (Perumal) resides to absolve mental distress.
Belief:
- Devotees believe that praying to Agasteeswarar and Perumal will help them get rid of all their problems and fulfill their wishes, whether related to personal issues, legal matters, career, or studies.
Festivals:
- Shivratri: A major festival dedicated to Lord Shiva.
- Pradosham: Celebrated on the 13th day of every lunar fortnight, a time for worshipping Lord Shiva.
