Introduction

The Sita Devi Temple, dedicated to Sita, is located in Deorbija Village in the Durg District of Chhattisgarh, India.

Puranic Significance: The Sita Devi Temple was built by the Kalachuri Kings in the 12th century CE. According to local legend, the temple was believed to have been constructed in just six nights. It is also said that during their exile, Lord Sri Ram, along with Sita and Lakshman, visited this place, adding to its mythological importance.

Special Features:

  • The temple is east-facing and is constructed from sandstone.
  • It follows a Saptaratha architectural plan, featuring seven projections or divisions in its structure.
  • The Shikara (the spire or tower) over the sanctum adheres to the Nagara architectural style.
  • The doorjambs of the sanctum are adorned with depictions of the river goddesses Yamuna and Ganga.
  • In the lintel above the entrance, there are representations of the Navagrahas (nine planetary deities) and Lord Ganesha.
  • The temple’s walls are embellished with images of various deities and figures, including Ganesha, Andhakasura, Shiva, Surya (the Sun god), Vishnu, Harihara (a combined form of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu), Hiranyagarbha, Lakshmi, Mahishasura Mardini (Goddess Durga in her form as the slayer of the demon Mahishasura), and Saraswathi (the Goddess of knowledge and arts).
  • Within the temple premises, there is a Sati Pillar, which holds historical and cultural significance.

Location: The temple is situated on the banks of the pond in Deorbija village, accessible via the Raipur – Bemetra Road. The temple’s location adds to its serene and spiritual ambiance.

The Sita Devi Temple has been recognized as one of the protected monuments in Chhattisgarh by the Archaeological Survey of India, acknowledging its historical and architectural value. This designation underscores its importance as a heritage site in the region.
