Introduction

Cittylingam Agnipureeswarar (Citilingeswarar) Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Cittylingam village, Kudavasal circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. Cittylingam is a small village, and this is the land where many Siddhas live because the river Agathiya Kaveri flows from north to south and turns north again making this region like a peninsula. Since there are many lingams worshiped by the Siddhas in this area, this place is called Chithirlingam and now it is Cittylingam.

Puranic Significance

It is said that there are 18 lingams around this town which are worshiped by all the eighteen idols. In the south of the town there is a small Shiva temple on the east side of a school building and a huge royal tree surrounds it. So they have taken the lingamurthi from there and built a small room inside it facing east. Here the presiding deity is called as Agnipureeswarar (Citilingeswarar) and Mother is called as Manonmani.  A small vinayaka is facing east and an Ambhika is facing south side of the temple. An old bond is broken and the temple is said to be more than 1000 years old.
