Introduction
The Malleshwar Temple, located in Bishnupur Town in the Bankura District of West Bengal, India, is a unique and historically significant temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
- Dedication: Among the many temples in Bishnupur dedicated to Lord Krishna, the Malleshwar Temple stands out as it is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This makes it unique in the context of Bishnupur, a town known for its Krishna temples.
- Historical Origin: The temple was built in the year 1622 AD by Malla King Bir Singha. It’s worth noting that he became the king in the year 1656 CE, which means that he constructed the temple before ascending the throne.
- Location: The Malleshwar Temple is situated near the Jor Bangla Temple, which is another significant temple in Bishnupur. This area is known for its cluster of historically important temples.
- Architectural Style: The temple is an Eka Ratna temple constructed with laterite stone. It has a square plan and originally featured a rekha sikhara (tower). However, the original sikhara has been replaced with an octagonal sikhara over time.
- Deity: The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, but it’s important to note that the temple does not currently house any deity of Lord Shiva. However, a beautiful idol of Nandi, the sacred bull and vehicle of Lord Shiva, is found in front of the shrine.
- Unique Style: The Malleshwar Temple has a unique architectural style compared to the other temples in Bishnupur. This distinction is due to its dedication to Lord Shiva, as well as its earlier construction.
- Thakur Dalan: In the vicinity of the temple, an old Thakur Dalan is situated. Thakur Dalans were historically used for placing the Durga deity during Navaratri celebrations. This particular Thakur Dalan holds heritage importance, adding to the cultural significance of the area.
The Malleshwar Temple, with its dedication to Lord Shiva and its unique architectural style, contributes to the diverse religious and cultural landscape of Bishnupur.
