Introduction

Mama Bhanja Temple is dedicated to the Lord Shiva located in Barsur Town in Dantewada District in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The temple is situated on Jagdalpur to Bhopalpatnam route.

Puranic Significance

It is believed to be built in 11th Century AD.

The Mama Bhanja Temple’s origin story is a remarkable tale of devotion and architectural prowess. It is said that a Nagavanshi ruler, who was a devout follower of Lord Shiva, aspired to build an extraordinary Shiva Temple within a single day. His intention was to gain fame and ensure the lasting greatness of his dynasty, with the temple serving as a testament to his devotion. To accomplish this ambitious task, the king enlisted the services of two architects who happened to be related to each other. One was the uncle (Mama) to the other, and the other was his nephew (Bhanja). Working tirelessly, this talented duo successfully constructed a magnificent temple within the allotted day, fulfilling the king’s wish. Delighted and grateful, the king not only paid the architects their well-deserved wages but also honored them by naming the temple after them. Hence, the temple became known as the Mama Bhanja Temple, a testament to the extraordinary dedication and skill of the architects who made the king’s vision a reality.

Special Features

The Mama Bhanja Temple is a significant protected monument in Chhattisgarh, recognized and preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India. This temple stands impressively at a height of about 50 feet (16 meters) and features a well-preserved, imposing curvilinear Sikhara (spire) above the sanctum. It is constructed on a molded base and displays an image of Lord Ganesh on the lalatabimba (lintel).

Inside the temple, you can find two idols of Lord Ganesh and a representation of Narasimha. The adhisthana (platform) and the door jambs are adorned with exquisite carvings featuring foliage, lotus motifs, and other decorative elements. Notably, sculptures of the architects Mama (maternal uncle) and Bhanja (nephew) can be seen near the top of the temple, paying homage to their exceptional craftsmanship.

Additionally, an inscription in Telugu characters, dating back to the 13th century AD, is found on the temple platform. This inscription provides valuable historical information about the temple’s origins and adds to its cultural significance. The temple’s architecture also reflects some Dravidian influences, showcasing the rich and diverse heritage of the region.
