The Bhabaniswar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a historically and architecturally significant religious site located in Baranagar Village in the Murshidabad District of West Bengal, India. This temple, situated on the banks of the Hooghly River, is known for its unique architecture and rich history.

Architectural Significance: The Bhabaniswar Temple is celebrated as one of the most remarkable structures in Baranagar, characterized by its unique architectural features. This temple, along with others in the Baranagar region, has been classified as a “Monument of National Importance” by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Patronage of Rani Bhabani: The Baranagar Temples, including the Bhabaniswar Temple, were constructed under the patronage of Rani Bhabani, the Queen of Natore, in the 18th century CE. Rani Bhabani is known for her vision of building 108 temples along the banks of the Hooghly River in an attempt to raise the status of Baranagar to that of Varanasi. While most of these temples have not survived, the ones that remain are significant heritage sites.
Construction Date: Bhabaniswar Temple was built in 1755 CE, and it is attributed to Rani Bhabani’s daughter, Tarasundari. The temple showcases the architectural and artistic skills of the time.
Pancha Mukhi Shiva Temple: Within the Baranagar Temple complex, there is the Pancha Mukhi Shiva Temple. It was renovated in 1940 by DL Nowlakha, a local Jain businessman. This temple is notable for being the tallest lime and mortar temple in Baranagar, standing at about 18 meters in height.
Unique Octagonal Shape: Bhabaniswar Temple is distinctive for its octagonal shape, which sets it apart from many other temples. The temple’s roof resembles an inverted lotus, adding to its uniqueness and aesthetic appeal.
Architectural Details: The temple features a corridor around the inner sanctum and is adorned with large floral motifs. The façade of the temple is decorated with human figurines. While the artwork is remarkable, it may be considered of average workmanship in comparison to some other ornate temples in the region.
