Introduction

The Nagareshvara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated in Bankapura Town in Shiggaon Taluk of Haveri District, Karnataka, India.

Historical Significance:

  • The Nagareshvara Temple was built during the 11th century CE by the Western Chalukyas.
  • The temple houses various inscriptions, two of which are dated to 1091 CE and 1138 CE, recording grants to the temple.

  • The temple is located within the ruins of the Bankapura fort and faces east.
  • It can be found on the Hangal to Lakshmeshwar route.

  • The temple is often referred to as the “Aruvattu Kambagala Gudi,” which translates to the “Sixty Pillars Temple,” a reference to the sixty Chalukyan-style pillars found in the mukha mandapa (entrance hall).
  • Access to the mukha mandapa is available from three sides: east, north, and south.
  • The mukha mandapa features exquisite carvings and intricate designs, with seating arrangements along the perimeter.
  • The outer walls of the mukha mandapa are adorned with miniature decorative towers and sculptures.
  • The ceiling within the mukha mandapa is highly ornate, with rosettes and imaginary creatures (Kirtimukhas) at the four corners.
  • The central ceiling of the mukha mandapa is particularly impressive, featuring a beautifully carved lotus motif.
