Introduction

The Bherundeshvara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located in Balligavi Town in the Shikaripura Taluk of Shivamogga District, Karnataka, India.

Historical Significance:

The Bherundeshvara Temple is believed to have been constructed during the reign of King Somesvara I (1042 – 1068 CE) of the Western Chalukyan dynasty.
It was originally built by Sovisetti and subsequently underwent extensive renovations by the Hoysalas.

Balligavi Town is situated approximately 3 kilometers from Shiralakoppa on the Shikaripura to Hangal route in Shivamogga District, Karnataka.

Special Feature:

The Bherundeshvara Temple is renowned for its towering pillar, which reaches a remarkable height of 9.15 meters.
This pillar stands on a two-tiered masonry platform with a height of 3.05 meters.
The square base that supports the pillar features a sculpture of a unique mythical creature known as Gandabherunda.

Gandabherunda:

Gandabherunda is depicted as a two-headed mythical bird with a human body, standing in an upright posture.
The creature has two arms, with one raising a human figure and placing it into one of its beaks, while the other lifts another human figure to be devoured by the opposite beak.
The eyes of the creature express intensity and anger.
The image is adorned with jewelry, and feathers embellish the neck and head of the bird-like body.

The architectural and sculptural prowess displayed in the Gandabherunda pillar is emblematic of the artistic achievements of the Western Chalukyan and Hoysala dynasties. It is a testament to the rich heritage and craftsmanship of the time, preserving this unique and captivating creation for generations to come.
