Introduction
Gopinatha Temple located in Baideswar Village, Cuttack District, Odisha, India. This temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
- Construction Period: The temple was constructed in the early 20th century CE, as per the inscription found on the walls of the jagamohana (assembly hall).
- Orientation: The Gopinatha Temple faces east and follows a pancharatha plan (five-fold) and panchangabada elevation style.
- Architectural Features:
- The temple complex consists of a rekha vimana (tower), a pidha jagamohana (assembly hall), and a garuda mandapa (hall).
- The vimana and jagamohana are square on plan, while the garuda mandapa is rectangular.
- The sanctum enshrines the images of Radha and Krishna placed on a high pedestal.
- The temple features images of Varaha (the boar incarnation of Lord Vishnu), Narasimha (the lion-man incarnation), and Trivikrama (the cosmic form of Lord Vishnu) housed in the parsvadevta niches located around the walls of the sanctum. These niches are designed like miniature pidha vimanas.
- The temple is adorned with miniature niches containing images of various gods and goddesses, scenes from Krishna Lila (the divine play of Lord Krishna), and the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu.
- The Garuda mandapa is decorated with paintings in floral designs, scenes from Krishna Lila, the story of Kanchi Abhijana, and images of deities such as Ganesha, Jagannatha, Balabhadra, and Subhadra.
