Introduction
Anthakudi Someswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Anthakudi village, Kivelur circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. Legend has it that Chandran came here and got salvation from death. Even today it is believed that the Lord in this temple is worshiped every moon day.The east facing temple is surrounded by walls. Above the entrance is the Lord in his chariot and near it is Vinayakar Murugan. Here the presiding deity is called as Lord-Someswarar and Mother is called as Somakalambikai.
Puranic Significance
The temple is said to be more than 1500 years old. The east-facing Lord’s Hall is attached to the Arthamandapm, a Chola-era structure, and the vimanan above it is built of brick. The front hall is made of brick; the temple of Ambigai is towards the south. Above the mahamandapam there is a sculpture of worshiping Lord Chandran. In the south is the beautiful Dakshnamurthy in sanctum. The Mahalakshmi shrine is in front of the Lord. There is a naga under a tree in the north side of the temple. In the north-east hall there is a lingam and two Bhairavas, Surya are there. If worshiped in this temple which is said to be a cure for Moon Dosha.
