Introduction

The Lakshmi Narayana Perumal Temple in Ambasamudram, located on the northern banks of the River Thamirabarani, is a significant place of worship dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his fierce form, with his head resembling a lion, and his consorts, Maha Lakshmi seated on his lap. The temple has several unique features and is associated with remedial measures for adverse planetary effects, particularly those of Shukra (Venus) and Budha (Mercury).

  1. Deities: The primary deities of the temple are Lord Lakshmi Narayana Perumal (Lord Vishnu) and Goddess Maha Lakshmi. The temple is known for its unique representation of Lord Vishnu in his fierce form.
  2. Sacred Tree: The holy tree in this Vishnu temple is the Vilva tree, which is traditionally associated with Lord Shiva. This is a unique aspect of the temple, symbolizing the unity of deities.
  3. Planetary Remedial Center: The temple is renowned as a remedial center for those seeking relief from adverse effects caused by the planets Shukra (Venus) and Budha (Mercury).
  4. Legend: According to legend, some seers who were on their way to meet the sage Agastya in the Podhigai Hills had doubts about whether Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu were one and the same. At that time, the temple was dedicated to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva appeared to the seers in the form of Vishnu and Maha Lakshmi. This event inspired the construction of the Lakshmi Narayana Perumal Temple.
  5. Offerings to Pacify Lord Narasimha: To pacify Lord Narasimha, especially during the evening pujas, a special drink made of dry ginger, jaggery, cardamom, water, and lime juice is offered as Nivedhana. On the Swati star day, devotees offer the same to Lord Narasimha for the same purpose.
  6. Unity and Family Harmony: Worship at the temple is believed to promote unity among couples and within families.
  7. Prayers for Education: Devotees also pray to Lord Perumal for the success of their children’s education.
  8. Remedies for Planetary Issues: Those facing problems associated with Mercury pray to Perumal with Tulsi garlands, while those facing issues related to Venus perform archanas to Goddess Maha Lakshmi with kumkum.
  9. Lighting Ghee Lamps: To overcome obstacles in wedding proposals, devotees light ghee lamps on coconut shells placed on rice spread on plantain leaves.
  10. Temple Age: The Lakshmi Narayana Perumal Temple is believed to be more than 1,000 years old, reflecting its historical significance.
  11. Temple Layout: The east-facing temple is located in the center of Ambasamudram town, a short distance from the famous Agastheeshwarar temple. The temple is relatively small in size and does not have a tower or a flagstaff.
  12. Rare Darshans: The temple features unique darshans of Chakkarathzhwar with 16 hands, Lord Yoga Narasimha, Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma, Adhishesha (divine serpent), and Lord Hanuman, who is depicted with a small Shivalinga on his head. Idols of Ramanuja, Nammalvar, and Vedanta Desikar are also found in the temple.
  13. Festivals: The temple celebrates various festivals, including the Vaikasi annual abishek in May-June, Purattasi Saturdays in September-October, and the Vedanta Desikar Utsavam.
