Introduction
The Kalachuri Temples Complex is a group of six ancient temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. These temples are known for their intricate architecture and historical significance. Puranic Significance
Karna Temple: This temple is one of the six in the complex and was built by the Kalachuris of Tripuris. It’s dedicated to Lord Shiva and is known for its architectural significance.
Keshava Narayan Temple: Another temple built by the Kalachuris of Tripuris, this temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Keshava Narayan form.
Machendranatha Temple: This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is also among the ancient structures built by the Kalachuris of Tripuris.
Pataleshwar Temple: This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva as Pataleshwar, is part of the Kalachuri Temples Complex.
Panch Math: Panch Math is a group of five temples constructed in different architectural styles, built by the Gond rulers in the 15th century CE. These temples are known for their unique designs and are constructed on a low raised platform.
Johila Temple: This temple, considered the latest addition to the complex, was likely built by a local chief. It features a shikara (tower) following a pyramidal style and is built on a raised platform.
Suraj Kund: Suraj Kund is a significant part of the temple complex, believed to have been excavated by Adi Shankaracharya. It’s considered the origin of the Narmada River and holds great religious importance. King Lakshmikarna of the Kalachuri Dynasty of Tripuri later renovated it.
