Introduction
Akkaraivattam Somanatha Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Located in the Akkaraivattam village, Karaikal district, Tamil Nadu. On the road from Karaikal to Nagore, after crossing the bridge two kilometres away, there is a small road that turns to the left. This Shiva temple is located on the eastern bank of the big lake here. This temple is one of the 108 temples built by Thirumalairayan.
Puranic Significance
The Temple is believed to bemore than 500 years old. He built a second temple of Somanatha temple in this Akkaraivattam village. Here the presiding deity is called as Somanatha, in the form of Lingam and Mother is called as Soundaravalli.
Siddanandaswamy was a Siddhartha who lived in the 18th century. He was enshrined in Soundaryavalli and Somanathar temple in Akkaraivattam village of Akkarai district; hence siddha samathi temple has been established at present. Thus it can be known that this temple has been here for more than five hundred years.
Lord Somanatha is depicted as a lingamurthi of a large size. Vinayaka and Muruga are on their separate sanctum at the gate of the front hall in front of Lord Soundarayavalli towards the south. There are Durga in the north and Dakshnamurti in the south, apart from the Karurai Kothams. In the northeast is Navagraha. This Shiva temple may have been in big temple at one time. Now the temple is a small one in this village.
