Introduction

Location:

  • The Krodha Narasimha Swamy Temple is located at Ahobilam in Andhra Pradesh, about 2 kilometers from the upper Ahobilam temple.
  • This temple is also referred to as Siddha Kshetra due to its sacred and revered nature.

Puranic Significance:

  • The deity here is worshipped as Krodha Narasimha, also known as Varaha Narasimha, which is a unique form of Lord Narasimha with the face of a boar.
  • According to the Puranas, after Lord Narasimha killed the demon Hiranyakashipu, he became very angry with Lord Brahma for granting the boon to Hiranyakashipu. Lord Narasimha summoned Brahma, but Brahma was afraid to approach him. During this, the Vedas fell from Brahma’s hands and were carried away by Bhumi Devi to Patala (the netherworld) to protect them.
  • To retrieve the Vedas, Lord Narasimha took the form of a creature with a single horn (Kroda) and went to Patala. He returned with Bhumi Devi seated on his horn, having successfully retrieved the Vedas. This form of Lord Narasimha is known as Krodha Narasimha.
  • In this temple, devotees can worship both Krodha Narasimha and Lakshmi Narasimha, as the Lord later showed himself in a peaceful form as Sri Malola Narasimha after being appeased by Brahma’s plea.
  • Chenchu Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Narasimha, is also featured prominently in this temple. The Lord is believed to have developed an attachment to her, which annoyed Lakshmi Devi, and the Lord is seen in the temple trying to pacify her.
  • Devotees also have darshan of Sri Varaha Tirtha in the temple, further enhancing its significance.

Beliefs:

  • A common belief is that visiting the Krodha Narasimha Swamy Temple helps devotees fulfill their desires.
  • It is also believed that success in one’s endeavors can be attained by observing penance for 5 days at the temple.
