Introduction
Thirumalpur, Konar Temple belongs to 9th Century built by Parantaka This temple is maintained by ASI. There is a big temple by Parantaga I at Thirumalpur Village called, Sri Manigandeswarar just 1km away. 3 km from Thirumalpur Railway Station. There is nothing in the sanctuary inside. Broken, headless statues on either side of the small hall . Opposite are some of the pillars with carvings. This ‘KONAR TEMPLE’ is located close to Kanchipuram, This temple is 9th Century treasure, with lots of inscriptions on it. Even though it’s a small temple, but has intricate sculptures,
Puranic Significance
1300 years old. The first is the stone temple built during the ParantakaChola period.In the sanctum sanctorum faade of the temple, there is a dome at each corner and a flag and a lunar zone. At the entrance of the front hall, on the left is the Kopparakesariinscription with the Madurai of Paranthakar. The miniatures are often shown as incarnations of Tirumala.Among them, historians have mentioned on his page that the sculptures of Kannan’s Kudakuttu, Govardhanagiri, Kannan built in Ural, Kannan stealing butter, Alilaikkannan etc.The entire temple is built of green colored stones. Round letters are engraved on the construction stones throughout the wall. Especially inside the temple sanctum there are no idols of Swami and no expensive ornaments. According to an official of the Chennai Archaeological Department, the temple was built during the 9th-10th century.It dates from the time of Paranthakar I to the time of Rajaraja.
