Introduction

About 20 km from Mayiladuthurai-Tharangambadi bus route (via Akkur), Tirukkadaiyur is located in the distance. About five minutes walk south from the same Shiva place is the Amirthanarayana Perumal Temple. Even though it is very close to the Amirthakadeswarar Temple, no one comes here to worship this Amirthanarayana. The present condition of the Amirthanarayana Perumal temple is very deplorable. The temple has been in ruins for over twenty years. The main shrine has the Lord in sitting posture along with Sridevi and Bhudevi. Mother Amirthavalli is also in sitting position. Praying to Mother Amirthavalli ensures good alliances for girls who are about to get married. Shri Bala Anjaneyar is having a separate shrine in this temple. Sri Ramanujar is believed to have worshipped in this temple. Though the temple is situated close to the Shri Abhirami temple, it was in a pathetic state for long. For a long time, the main structure was protected by thatched shed. This is one of the few temples of Chozha period which was constructed using bricks instead of granite. The entire temple was constructed using bricks which are unique to this area. The temple is under the control of the Department of Hindu Religious

Puranic Significance

Devas and Asuras churned Thirupparkadal and obtained the Nector. Vishnu deceived asuras and placed it in a Kalasa. When the Kalasa was opened again, the Nectar (Amirdham) was in the form of Shivalingam. Vishnu understood that this was due to the absence of the grace of Parvathy. He removed the ornaments on his bosom and worhsipped them considering them Parvathy. Ambal appeared then with the name of Abirami and offered her grace for obtaining Amirdham. Vishnu shared the Amirdha among the Devas. An asura joined the Devas in the disguise of a Deva and drank the amirdham. He attained immortality and the strength of Devas. Vishnu cut him into two. He did not lose his life as he was immortal. The cut pieces of his body became Ragu and Kedhu and joined the Navagraha Mandala. Vishnu, who is responsible for the appearance of Abirami Ammai and also for getting Amirdham for Devas, is gracing as Amirdha Narayana Perumal at Thirukkadaiyur along with Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi. That the expectant women are blessed with good husbands if they offer worship to Amirdhavalli Thayar is a popular belief.
