Introduction
Located in the northern banks of River Cheyyar, Thiru Magaral is situated at around12 kms from Walajabad in Kanchipuram dt, Tamil nadu. Ancient scriptures indicate that Thiru Magaral was also called Padhanoopuram, Thirupurandakam and Gireesapuram. Thiru Magaral is also famous for the exquisite 9th Century Thirumagaraleeswarar temple, one of the ‘Padal Petra Sthalams’. From inscriptions, it is understood that the temple must have been built between 1200 – 1500 AD. They also suggest that the temple was maintained by a Siddha Purusha named Thirumalai Siddhar whose Jeeva samadhi is few meters away. A portion of the structure is completely damaged due to an overgrown peepal tree on its walls. Inside, the team saw a stunning 6 ft statue of the Goddess with an intriguing smile. To the left, partially destroyed lingam was found with only the Avudai intact. Sri Mahavishnu along with Sridevi & Boodevi blesses us in a separate sannidhi. A beautiful Nandi was found outside the temple while clearing the bushes. He seemed to be waiting for the temple to be back in all its glory. There was a huge rock buried at the entrance.
