Introduction
Sathanur village is on the way from Pudukkottai to Ponnamaravathi. Here in the middle of the fields is the Umapathiswarar Temple built during the third KulothungaChola period. This is a famous temple that was once worshiped and revered by Kulothungan III and Veera Pandian. Now it is devoid of worship without any maintenance. No one even goes to the temple. Above the sanctum a banyan tree has grown. The Shiva lingam itself is immersed in the leaves falling from the banyan tree. The largest of these is the ancient carvings, the idols of Ganesha and Dakshinamoorthy lying unattended outside the temple. These idols are in danger of being stolen at any time as no one goes to the temple side
