Introduction

The Chandrasekhara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva and located in Pattadakal, Karnataka, India, is part of the renowned Pattadakal Group of Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Puranic Significance:

The Chandrasekhara Temple is estimated to have been constructed in the mid-8th century, according to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). It is one of the historical and architectural gems among the group of temples in Pattadakal.

Special Features:

The Chandrasekhara Temple is relatively small in size and faces east. It is situated adjacent to the Galaganatha Temple and to the left of the Sangameshvara Temple, forming part of the temple complex in Pattadakal.
The temple’s architectural style is characterized by its simplicity. Unlike some of the other grand temples in the complex, it does not have an ornate superstructure or shikara.
The temple primarily consists of a garbha griha (sanctum) housing a Shiva Lingam and a closed hall. There is a statue of Nandi, Lord Shiva’s divine bull, placed on a platform to the east of the sanctum, facing the Linga.
In contrast to many other temples with elaborate superstructures, the Chandrasekhara Temple does not feature a tower above the sanctum.
The temple’s layout adheres to specific design principles mentioned in Hindu architectural texts. It occupies a space measuring 33.33 feet in length and 17.33 feet in breadth, resting on an adhishthana (platform).
While the exterior of the temple is relatively plain and devoid of intricate ornamentation, it is adorned with detailed pilasters.
Devakosthas (niches) can be found in the walls on either side of the Chandrasekhara temple’s sanctum, although there is no lintel. Instead, the entrance is guarded by dvarapalas (guardian deities) on each side, and the door frames are carved with shakhas, adding architectural detail to the temple’s facade.

The Chandrasekhara Temple, with its simplicity and adherence to architectural guidelines, is a valuable part of the Pattadakal Group of Monuments, offering insight into the rich history and architecture of the region.
