Musaravakkam is located at a distance of about 10 km from Kanchipuram. This Shiva temple is now in a state of disrepair. Muthusamy, a landlord from Musaravakkam village, renovated the temple in 1948 at his own expense. Since then, the shrine has been undergoing a series of repairs and renovations.

Puranic Significance

In the Shiva Purana, when Shiva was meditating on Mount Mandara, Parvati was in a playful mood and covered Shiva’s eyes. This caused the whole universe to become covered in darkness. The sweat that oozed out of Parvati’s hands due to touching Shiva fell to the ground and created a horrible looking and blind boy. Parvati was terrified on seeing him, but Shiva rebuked her, claiming that since he was born due to their physical contact, he was their child. When the demon king Hiraṇyākṣa performed penance to please Shiva in order to beget a child, Shiva gifted the boy to him and named him Andhaka due to his blindness. He performed many penances and received many boons from Brahman. The man, who also had eyesight, tortured everyone in a manner befitting of monsters. He also dared to imprison Shakti Devi as the culmination of cruelty. In order to gather the Siva and kill the demonic forces, Bhairavar, the aspect of Eesan, destroyed Antakana in the battle of Tirukovilur. When he died, he prayed to Eesan. Eesan freed him from the womb, immersed him in Ekampathurai Thirukulam and removed his reactions. According to the Kanchi Purana, the man who surrendered toEesan at the Tiruputkuzhi Manikandiswarar Temple became one of the Sivaganas united in the Shivalingam he had created. Ambika lost her power due to the heat caused to Bhairava Murthy while destroying Antakana. She came to the world to repent, reached the place called Musaravakkam and immersed herself in meditation. All the deities including Brahman, Vishnu and Indra came here and worshiped Ambika and asked her to return Kailaya. Umayyad said, “I caused that man to be born. So, I will return to Kailaya only after my error is removed and I regain the lost power. ” The days moved on. Eason was heartbroken. Shiva Asari sounded. “Goddess! Take Shiva’s initiation again, worship Shiva in this temple, regain the strength and prosperity you lost, attain the position of Shakti, and return to the Kailaya, ”said Lord Shiva. Accordingly, Shakti Devi, who was re-ordained at this Musaravakkam site on the banks of the lake, continued to worship Shiva. Soon got the benefit. On a holy day, Lord Shiva came here surrounded by eleven devotees. Shakti Devi, who was renewed and energized, worshiped Swami, came to take Shakti Devi and named her Sthalam Eesan Saktiswarar. At their request the Swami had a temple here, as Saktiswara and as Amman Tripura Sundari.
