Introduction
Poovendhiranathar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Mariyur Village in Kadaladi Taluk in Ramanathapuram District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Poovendhiranathar and Mother is called as Pavalaniravalli Amman. Mariyur was also known as Karumaari in ancient time.
Puranic Significance
It is believed that the Temple was built by Varuna, Lord of rains. Ravana, Dhurmakentha Maharishi and Sages worshipped Lord Shiva of this Temple. It is believed that the Temple was buried under sands for hundreds of years. It was found and reconstructed by Sethupathy Kings of Ramnad and under the control of Ramanathapuram Sethupathy Samasthanam. The Temple is situated very close to the seashore. There is a Vinayagar Idol in this Temple. If you tap the idol, it will produce metallic sound. It is believed that there was a tunnel in this Temple connecting it to Uttarakosamangai. Sthala Vriksham is Munnai Tree.

The landscape of Marijuana and the architectural sophistication of the temple amaze us. There is special Mandapam for Ravana. Rare trees and herbs are found throughout the temple. It is a miracle that the tree has survived for many years. The inside and outside of the temple has a large villva tree for Lord Shiva.
