Introduction

Mumbai is home to the Jogeshwari caves temple, is dedicated to lord Shiva. They named after a deity known as “Yogeshwari” by the local people. The caves date back 1500 years ago and are sacred to both, Hindus and Buddhists. It is considered to be a shrine to Lord Shiva, the caves house a lot of pillars and sculptures of Hindu deities, belonging to the Mahayana Buddhist architecture. These are one of the earliest cave temples in Mumbai and are surrounded by rocks on both sides. The Archaeological Survey of India declared the Jogeshwari Caves a protected monument of national importance

Special Features

The cave temples dedicated to Shiva, Hanuman, Ganesh and Yogeshwari Devi (also known as Goddess Durga). On the walls of the caves are beautiful carvings of the Buddha along with other deities such as Hanuman, Ganesh, and Shiva.. Some of the carvings are similar to those found in the famous Ajanta and Ellora caves.

Festivals

The caves see huge crowds during the festival of Mahashivratri, which occurs in February.
