Introduction
Gummadidurru (near Ramireddypalli) is a major Buddhist site in District Krishna, Andhra Pradesh. Much of the site has been removed by local people for building materials. Fortunately, the lower portions of the main stupa were below the current day ground level and have yielded many sculpted stone slabs (most now in the Amaravati Museum) showing scenes from the life of the Buddha and Jatakas. The site shows evidence of long occupation, at least from the second century CE to the seventh century CE. The evidence for monastic presence is an inscription granting the sect named Purvasailiya, and money for their maintenance. It is presumed that they were the main monastic establishment on the site.
