Introduction
Villupuram – 28 km from Villupuram on the Gingee Highway. 6 km on a rural road in the distance.. The temple was built by the Pallava king Mahendravarma I (600 – 630 AD). The south face is 32 feet long and 3.5 feet above ground level. There is a cave temple on the Panchapandavar hill at Mampattu, north of Italavanur. Up to this point the temple is mentioned in the inscription as ‘ Sathrumalleswaram ‘. Ilingam is found in the sanctum sanctorum. There are two inscriptions up to this point. One is a Northern language inscription and the other is a Tamil inscription. The only tunnel with a footbridge. It can be said to be the forerunner of the construction temple bearing system.
