Introduction

Thanjavur – Ten km from Thanjavur on the Kumbakonam Highway. In the distance is the village of Netar The Srikalahasti Temple is located in this village on the banks of the river Vettarankara. It is a town with only two small streets and is home to a 300year old Shiva temple. When Durvasar worshiped Lord Kalahasti, each of the flowers scattered during the puja evolved into a Kalahasti deity. One of them is the temple on the banks of this river. Waiting there is shocking if you know the location of the temple. The temple is very dilapidated. Even though the temple is in ruins, the pottery of the Kalahastiswara stands majestically. This Kalahastiswarar is waiting for the arrival of the Gurus who bring handfuls of oil and water to cool himself daily. “With the kind permission of Sri Kadambur K. Vijayan, these are extracted from his posts”.

Puranic Significance

Although the temple is in a state of disrepair, the structure and layout of the temple indicate that it was once a temple. This is a temple where great festivals once took place. It was the custom on that day for the Lord to depart from here for the Masi Magam ceremony at Kumbakonam. When Nedar Kalahastiswarar goes in procession and reaches Kumbakonam, the other Swamis will go down to the Mahamaka pond together and pay their respects. This place does not have the same pride as the Kalahasti Temple in Kalahasti, Andhra Pradesh. It is said that Rahu and Ketu doshas can be remedied in this temple as well. Some who know the details may still come here and seek redress. There are currently no temples as per the perimeter wall of the royal tower. The altar and the flagpole are not here. On one side of the long hall is the shrine facing the Lord, and on the other side is the shrine facing the Lord facing south. Kalahastiswara’s plane is a three-tier three-plane plane. Ambika’s plane is a single-plane plane. It is clear that there are no sculptures installed on the planes. Renovation work was under on the ruined temple. Currently the reversal has stalled for whatever reason. In front of the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Kalahasti, a long hall is built and stands with a defect. There is only Nandi and the altar in it. The goddess Mangalambika is facing south. There are no deities and no shrines in the sanctum sanctorum. I think 60% of the work is done.

Beliefs

If a man and a woman who are not allowed to get married come here and worship, the marriage will be consummated immediately. If such people come here and anoint Srikalahastiswara with cow’s milk and worship him, the evil will be cured and they will get married soon. This is a place of worship for those who have naga dosham as the field is worshiped. There is no separate junction for the Navagrahas as Easwaran is the deity of Tosha Nivardhi.
