Introduction
Purvesvara Shiva Temple is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is located in Kancha Sahi which is an old town located near the capital city – Bhubaneswar, in Odisha (a state in India). According to the local mythology, the presiding deity of the temple is known as Purvesvara, therefore the temple is named as Purvesvara Shiva Temple.
Puranic Significance
The Purvesvara Shiva temple was built according to the Kalinga Architecture style in the 13th century AD. The date of origin was confirmed based on the stone carvings and the techniques of the sculpture carving present within the temple. There is a Shivalinga present within the Purveswara temple, although it is broken in a few places people still visit the temple to worship Lord Shiva. Many Devotees are seen gathering at the temple during New Year, Makra Sankranti, Shivaratri and other auspicious days to worship Lord Shiva. Many devotees visit the temple for a blessing when they are starting their careers or any important issue in their life. It is said that the blessings of Lord Shiva before starting something new will provide positive results. The Purveswara temple is being managed by the state government who formed an association called the Purvesvara Temple Development Association. The Purvesvara Shiva Temple is known for attracting many historians over the years. Although the original door was replaced with new doors for maintenance the rest of the architecture, paintings and sculptures are still intact and showcase the beauty of the Kalinga Architecture.
