Introduction
Manikarnikesvara Temple is located almost opposite Ananta Vasudeva Temple on the east bank of Bindu Sagar Tank in old Bhubaneswar. It is very close to a temple that is marked as Brahma Temple, that name is attributed to the temple in the middle of the tank. Many years ago all that existed here was three life size standing images, one of Vishnu and two of Balarama (the elder brother of Krishna), plus a small shrine annexed to the south. Today the three carvings have been partially enclosed by a whitewashed structure, providing the deities with a roof for protection but still open to the west so they can look out over the tank. The carvings are thought to date to the 15th century A.D.
