Introduction
Sahastrakoot Chaityalaya, Banpur is located in Banpur Lalitpur district, in Uttar Pradesh State. There are 2 Jain temples in Banpur (Lalitpur), out of which this Jain temple is partially dilapidated condition. There are 2 Jain temples within 1 km radius of Sahastrakoot Chaityalaya, and another one is Shri Digambar Jain Atishya Kshetra which is in good condition. Banpur is renowned as a miraculous pilgrimage center of Jainism and history leads us to Gurjar Prathihaar, Chandell era of about 1000 years ago. There are about 5 shrines are situated in a large premise of Banpur pilgrimage center. These temples are under management of Jain community where as one temple of Sahastrakoot Chaityalaya (with 1008 idol carved on a single stone) is protected under Archaeological survey of India. Sahastrakoot Chaityalaya is built in Nagar style which has four entrances to reach the Chaityalaya through flight of steps. The temple has shikhara adorned with Aamlak on top. Sculpture of Rishabhdev and goddess Saraswati are here. The main chaitya contains 1008 Jina sculptures carved in the temple.
