Introduction

The Adi Narayana Perumal Temple is located near Thiruvarur in Tamil Nadu, at Enkan. This ancient temple is known for its rare depiction of Lord Vishnu seated atop Garuda, which is unique in Vishnu temples. Devotees are able to witness Garuda seva darshan daily, offering a special experience where Vishnu appears on His vehicle, Garuda, to rescue one of His disciples. The temple features traditional architecture and sculptures, and its historical significance adds to its allure.

Puranic Significance:

The temple has a significant legend tied to Sage Brigu and a Chola king. The king, while hunting, disturbed the sage’s penance, causing the sage to curse him with the face of a lion. To seek redemption, the king followed the sage’s advice and took a dip in the Vettaru River and prayed to Lord Vishnu at this temple. As a result, the king regained his human face on the Mrigasira star day.

Beliefs:

  1. Garuda Vahana: Lord Vishnu appearing atop Garuda is a significant belief of the temple. It is believed that Vishnu, in this form, is ready to quickly rescue His devotees.
  2. Mrigaseerisha Nakshathira: Devotees born under the Mrigaseerisha Nakshathira are encouraged to visit this temple on the Mrigaseerisha Star Days each year for divine blessings.
  3. Baby Boon Ritual: Couples seeking to have children perform a ritual with sugarcanes, a sari, and fruits as a cradle. By carrying this around the temple, they believe they will be blessed with a child.
  4. Parihara Sthala: The temple is considered a remedy for Naga Dosha and Pakshi Dosha (bird-related doshas).

Special Features:

  • The temple is considered a Parihara Sthala for those affected by planetary doshas, especially for Mrigaseerisha Nakshathira born individuals.
  • Devotees seek blessings for relief from family issues, skin diseases, recurring death incidents, child health problems, and enemies.
  • Thirumanjanam (Abishekam) on Wednesdays and Saturdays is believed to bring happiness and remove obstacles.
