Introduction
- Location: The Bala Subramanya Temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan and is situated in Siruvapuri, in the Thiruvallur District of Tamil Nadu. This area is also referred to as Chinnambedu.
- Historical Significance: Believed to be around 500 years old, this temple is renowned for granting wishes, particularly those related to buying or constructing houses. It is closely associated with the Ramayana, specifically with the story of Rama’s sons, Lava and Kusha. The temple has been glorified by the hymns of Arunagirinathar, a 14th-century saint and poet.
- Temple Administration: The temple is managed by the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Department.
- Unique Features: One of the most notable features of the temple is the emerald stone peacock (Maragatha Mayil) that serves as Lord Murugan’s vahana (vehicle). The main deity, Balasubrahmanya, is about 4.5 feet tall and depicted in a standing posture. In front of him is the sanctum of Saint Arunagirinathar. Notably, all the deities except for Lord Muruga are sculpted in emerald stone. A unique aspect of this temple is the depiction of Lord Muruga with his spouse Valli, hand in hand.
Puranic Significance
- Connection to Ramayana: The temple’s lore ties back to the Ramayana, specifically the story of Lava and Kusha, who were born after Lord Rama sent his wife Sita away due to public opinion. Following this, Lord Rama conducted an Aswamedha Yagam. However, the Yagam’s horse was imprisoned, leading to a sequence of events where Lord Rama himself went to release it. This area is identified as Siruvapuri (or Chinnampedu), where Lava and Kusha confronted Lord Rama.
- Historical Anecdote: According to local legends, a devotee named Murugamaiyaar faced severe trials. Her husband doubted her fidelity and cut off her hand, yet she continued to meditate on Lord Murugan. Miraculously, Lord Murugan appeared and restored her hand, symbolizing divine grace and devotion.
Beliefs
- Devotional Practices: It is believed that devotees do not need to observe strict vows or fasts to receive blessings from Lord Murugan. Simply remembering Siruvapuri Murugan is said to be enough for the fulfillment of wishes, akin to attaining Mukti by merely thinking of Tiruvannamalai.
- Worship for House Construction: Those wishing to build new homes are encouraged to worship here. Upon the fulfillment of their wishes, devotees typically perform a milk abhishekam (ritual bathing) for Lord Muruga.
- Marriage Blessings: Worshiping Lord Muruga on the Poosam star day is believed to hasten marriage, as it is said that the wedding of Valli and Murugan occurred on this auspicious day.
Special Features
- Architectural Elements: The temple features a five-tier Rajagopuram (tower), showcasing exquisite South Indian temple architecture.
- Unique Idol of Muruga: The Maragatha Mayil (emerald peacock) is a distinctive feature, enhancing the temple’s charm and significance.
- Arunagirinathar’s Legacy: The presence of Arunagirinathar’s sanctum nearby reflects his connection to the temple, where he is believed to have sung numerous Thiruppugazh hymns. He also composed special Archanai Thiruppugazh on Lord Muruga that, when recited, is thought to fulfill devotees’ wishes.
