Temple History:
- The temple is over 1000 years old.
- The presiding deity, Lord Varadaraja, blesses devotees from under the Punyakoti Vimana in the sanctum sanctorum.
- Devotees first worship the Vimana and then the Lord, following the belief that this worship removes their sins.
Puranic Significance:
- Lord Varadaraja appeared in a devotee’s dream, revealing that He was present as an idol in a nearby canal.
- The devotee found the idol and installed it, leading to the growth and popularity of the temple.
- Brahmotsavam is celebrated during Vaikasi (May-June).
- Purattasi Saturdays (September-October): Lord is dressed as Lord Venkatachalapathi (from Tirupati), and on the third Saturday, he wears the Vaira Angi ornament, earning the temple the name Tirupati Perumal.
- On Vaikasi Poornima (May-June), Lord Varadaraja appears as Kallazhagar Perumal, similar to the ritual in Madurai.
- The event of granting salvation to Maharshi Mandooka is celebrated grandly.
Beliefs:
- Devotees pray for wedding blessings and childbirth.
- Special Thirumanjanam (ritual bathing) is performed for Lord Varadaraja to fulfill these wishes.
Special Features:
- Lord Varadaraja is seen on the Garuda Vahana during Chithirai (April-May) and Aipasi (October-November) full moon Panchami (fifth) day.
- Mother Perundevi shrine is on the right side of Lord Varadaraja’s shrine.
- A separate shrine for Lord Srinivasa Perumal with Mother Alarmelmangai Thayar exists, following the same rituals as the main deity.
- The Punyakoti Vimana is located above the sanctum sanctorum.
- The Navagraha shrine (dedicated to the 9 planets) is in the prakara, and Karupannaswamy, the guardian deity, is outside the temple.
- Lord Emaneswaranar Temple, worshipped by Yama, is nearby, believed to be where Yama was dismissed by Lord Shiva when he tried to capture Sage Markandeya.
