Introduction
Location:
- The Muthalankurichi Lakshminarasimhar Temple is located in Muthalankurichi town, in the Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu.
- It is situated 15 km from Tirunelveli on the Thiruchendur road, near Daranganallur, and a 6 km drive from there leads to the temple.
- The town is situated on the banks of the Tamiraparani River, which adds to the temple’s historical significance.
- The temple is not open daily but performs pujas whenever devotees visit, particularly due to the presence of the Archer’s house nearby.
- Auto facilities are available from Karadanga Nallur to reach the temple.
Puranic Significance:
- The temple is believed to have been established during the reign of Pandya king Veerapandiya, who constructed it in honor of Lord Shiva. The king is said to have named the temple Mukilvannathar due to the clouds always swirling around the Tamiraparani River.
- Over 1000 years ago, the temple was grand and housed large idols of Vinayagar, Bhairava, and Sivakami Ammal. However, around 200 years ago, the temple was destroyed by a river flood.
- Following this destruction, the rulers of the region rebuilt the temple on a smaller scale and consecrated the deities again. The temple currently houses idols of Shivalingam, Sivakami Ammal, Bhairava, and Lakshmi Narasimha.
- Nandi, who was swept away in the Tamiraparani River, was later found and is believed to be placed in a different location within the town.
- The temple’s Lakshmi Narasimha is one of the few places in Tamil Nadu where this deity is worshipped alone, making it a unique and significant site.
- Vinayagar resides between the Shiva and Lakshmi Narasimha sanctums. This Vinayagar, Veilugandavinayagar or Mukuruni Arisivinayagar, stands at 5 feet tall in an open clearing, exposed to the sun.
Beliefs:
- Lord Lakshmi Narasimha, depicted sitting with Lakshmi on his lap, is believed to bless devotees who seek his help with resolving long-standing issues.
- Worshiping here is said to help remove enemies and bring success in difficult situations.
- The temple is especially known for its powers in removing obstacles and granting blessings related to long-term issues and challenges.
