Introduction
Karuppur Somanatha Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Located in the Karuppur village, Thiruvarur circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. Karuppur village is two kilometres south on the Tiruvarur – Keevalur road from Adiyakkamangalam. Here is a Shiva temple facing east on the bank of a large rectangular pond at the front of the town, which has recently been completely dug up. Here the Lord is called as Somanathar because he is the god worshiped by the moon named Soman. Soman also means Nilakandan and Mother is called as Azhaginayaki.
Puranic Significance
The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. Here the Lord is facing east with a square body. The Lord’s plane is said to be in other places. The Goddess has a shrine towards the south. In the front hall there is Bhairava and Sun. Outside the main hall is the Nandi altar in the sanctum. Tenmugan is small in Karurai Kottam. Vinayagar is housed in a small sanctum sanctorum in the first of the Prakara temples. Next there are the Nagas and a Lingamurthy. Next is Vallitheivanai Samedhamurugan sanctum.
