Introduction
- Located in Chandikhole, Jajpur district, Odisha, the Mahavinayak Temple is a major pilgrimage center and one of the oldest Ganesha temples in Odisha.
- Five gods – Shiva, Vishnu, Durga, Sun, and Ganesha – are worshiped as one deity in a single Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum).
Puranic Significance
- Constructed by the Keshari Dynasty in the 12th century.
- Mythological importance:
- Rati Devi, wife of Kamadev, prayed to Lord Ganesha, and five gods simultaneously extended their hands to receive her offerings. This granite stone containing the divine power of five gods emerged on that day.
- Kamadev was released from Lord Shiva’s curse at this site.
- Associated with Mahabharata legends:
- The Baruna hill area served as Yudhisthira’s capital, and his palace remains, known as Teligarh, can still be seen.
- Mother Kunti offered Golden Champa flowers to Lord Shiva from this site for her sons’ victory.
- The detached head of Lord Ganesha is believed to have fallen here.
Special Features
- Unique worship practice: Five gods worshiped as one, so the temple remains open without pahada (sleeping time for gods).
- Bilva leaves (for Shiva) and Tulasi leaves (for Vishnu) are used together in prasadam.
Festivals
- Major festivals include Shiva Ratri and Makar Sankranti.
