Introduction

The Wangath Temple Complex, located in Wangath Village near Naranag in the Ganderbal District of Jammu and Kashmir, is a group of temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Location: The Wangath Temple Complex is situated high above the Sind Valley, near the Naranag Nallah. It is located in a dense forest of pine and fir trees in the lap of the Harmukh Mountain (formerly known as Sodaratirth).

Architectural Features: The complex consists of a cluster of ancient temples, which are now in ruins. These temples were constructed using local grey granite. The complex had two clusters of temples. One cluster consisted of six temples, while the other cluster had eleven temples. The temples are known for their adherence to Vastu Shastra, an ancient architectural style.

Archaeological Significance: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has declared the Wangath Temple complex at Naranag as centrally protected monuments of India. This recognition highlights the archaeological and historical importance of the site.

Puranic Significance: The Wangath Temple Complex has significant puranic (ancient Indian scriptures) importance. It consists of two distinct groups: one on the western side and the other on the eastern side. Each group is enclosed by separate stone walls and is located a short distance from the other.

The western complex includes six temples, primarily dedicated to Shiva-Jyestharudra or Shiva-Jyeshthesa. The central temple in this complex is a square structure with entrances facing northeast and southwest. It has an unpaved square space at the center, believed to be the site of the deity’s pedestal. The roof is pyramidal externally, while the interior features a domed ceiling.

The eastern complex is enclosed by a massive rectangular stone wall with a two-chambered gateway. The largest temple in this complex is dedicated to Bhuteswara, which houses a Shiva Linga in the sanctum. This temple has two entrances, one facing the rising sun and the other the setting sun.

Between the two temple complexes lies a central pavilion consisting of the remains of a large building with significant dimensions.
