Introduction

Virudhachalam Ekanayakar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Virudhachalam town, Virudhachalam circle, Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu. This Ekanayagar temple is on the left side after crossing the by-pass on the road leading to Karuvepillangu to the south of Virudhachalam. Here the Presiding deity is called as Ekanayakar in the form of Lingam.

Puranic Significance

The temple is said to be more than 1000 years old. There is an eighteen-quarter hall extending from east to west, and the lord named Ekanayakar is seated in the courtyard facing west. In front of him are a beautiful Nandi and an altar. The sanctum sanctorum is surrounded by a circular hall. Somaskandar in Thiruvidaimarudur is called Ekanayakar, but how he got this name is not known.

There are no shrines except the Shiva shrine. The recently built temple on a large plot of land is completely built of black stone with beautiful black stone pillars. It is said that the deity here was on the banks of a nearby stream and then a shed was erected and worshiped. Last June 2018, the temple was flooded. To the south of the temple there is a shrine of Vinayakar. A large hospital is maintained near it. As it is on the main road, people come and go regularly.
