Introduction

Venkata Subramanya Swamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan located at Valasaravakkam, a well-known locality in Chennai City of Tamil Nadu. The Temple is also called as Santhoshi Matha Temple because of the presence of Santhoshi Matha shrine in the Temple premises.

The Temple is located on the Arcot Road in Valasaravakkam area of Chennai very near to Valasaravakkam Bus Stop. The Temple is located at about 400 meters from Valasaravakkam Bus Stop, 14 Kms from Egmore Railway Station and 12 Kms from Chennai International Airport.

Puranic Significance

The idol was found during digging a plot of land to plant survey stones when real estate business started to develop in this area. The real estate business man who developed the plot built this Temple for the success, he achieved in his business. Famous Muruga devotee Kirupanandha Variyar Swamigal visited this temple and named him as Venkata Subramaniam, as he had the Vishnu chakra behind his head.

The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. The Temple is facing towards east. Presiding Deity is called as Venkata Subramanya Swamy. He is housed in the sanctum. Lord Murugan is depicted in Brahma Sastha form. In this posture, He holds a Japamalai in his upper right hand and a Kamandala in his upper left hand. The bottom two hands show Abhaya and Varadha Hastha.

His right foot is having six fingers which is a unique feature. Vishnu Chakra can be seen behind his head. There is Santoshi Matha shrine in the Temple complex. There are shrines for Lord Hanuman, Ganesha, Shiva and Navagraha in the temple premises.
