Introduction

Thiruvidaimarudur Athmanathar Temple is dedicated to lord shiva, located in the Thiruvidaimarudur village, Kumbakkonam Circle, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu state, India. The Thiruvidaimarudur site is one of the sites considered to be parallel to Kasi. This place is also known as the Panchalingam shtalam because of the four Shiva temples of Viswanathar, Atmanathar, Rishipuriswarar and Sokkanathar sitting in the middle of the four streets along this Thiruvidaimarudur. The Atmanathar Temple is located on the south street in the thiruvidainarudur village. The temple is managed by a separate community. The worships are done in the same way as the Tiruperundurai temple. The presiding deity is called as Athmanathar, And Mother is called as Yogambal. The temple is about a thousand years old as it was built after the arrival of the Maanikkavaasagar. The temple is built of granite. The Lord is facing east and the goddess is facing south. In one of the small shrines in front of the Goddess there was a Maanikkavaasagar – It was stolen some time ago.

Puranic Significance

When Adiyar came from southern Tamil Nadu with the crowd, he stayed in this place and worshiped Lord sthalam. Later, when they went to many places, a group of servants who did not want to part with Lord sthalam stayed here. Together, they have built a temple for their community to worship, similar to the Atmanathar temple designed by his guru. Shiva is in the sanctum sanctorum as the only one here. There was a small tower on the facade when going south way inside. Over time only the fade of the gate remains. In front of the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, there is a beautiful view of Nandi. Next to it is a large Ganesha statue facing east. Currently, Mr. Anchu belongs to the community, looks after the temple.
