Introduction
- The Bhairava Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located in Eechankaranai Village, near Thiruvadisoolam, in Chengalpattu Taluk, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.
- The temple was constructed by Sri Bhairava Siddhantham Swamigal from Nagercoil.
- It is situated close to the Thiruvadisoolam Gnanapureeswarar Temple and is about 8 km from Chengalpattu, 10 km from Chengalpattu Junction Railway Station, and 43 km from Chennai Airport.
Puranic Significance
- The temple is believed to be 500 years old and is facing east with a circular design.
- The temple’s interior is structured like a Shiva Lingam, and the circular sanctum is built on two levels.
- The upper level is accessed by twelve steps, which represent the twelve zodiac signs (Rasi). Devotees believe that climbing these steps will relieve them from doshas.
- The upper sanctum enshrines the presiding deity, Bhairava, who is housed in a transparent glass enclosure.
- The design of the stairs is unique, ensuring that no devotee shows their back while leaving the sanctum.
- The lower level of the sanctum houses:
- Ashta Bhairavas
- Saptha Rishis (in stone form)
- Saptha Kannigais (in brass lamp form)
- Shrines dedicated to Pancha Mukha Anjaneya, Pratyangira Devi, Subramanya with his consorts Valli & Devasena, Rudra Vinayaga, Vaishnavi Devi, and Naga Rudra Eswara can also be found in the temple.
- The Sthala Vriksham (sacred tree) is a Peepal Tree, and a trident is installed in front of it.
- Lighting lamps or camphor is strictly prohibited in the temple, emphasizing its unique customs.
Special Features
- The temple has a special custom of offering Vaikkarisi (rice) as Neivethanam. This practice is based on the belief that one cannot predict or avoid their sufferings at the time of death. To minimize these sufferings, devotees donate rice to the temple during their lifetime, which is offered to Bhairava.
Festivals
- All major Shiva-related festivals, especially Masi Magam, are celebrated with great enthusiasm and reverence at the temple.
