Introduction

Velladainatha Swami Temple is a Hindu temple situated in the village of Thirukkarukavur in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu, India. Thirukarugavur is believed to be the place when the Saivite saint Sundarar was purified of the sin of killing Jains who lost in debate with him. The temple tank in front of the temple is believed to turn white during new moon day of Tamil month of Thai (January – February. It is one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams – Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Tevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Tirugnanasambandar and Sundarar Thala Virutcham : Vilwa Theertham : Paalkinaru

Puranic Significance

Sambandar, who tried to convert to vegetarianism, won an argument with the Jains in Madurai. The Jesuits who appeared in argument with him were washed away. Thus Sambandar, who had washed away the Jains, wanted to go to Kasi and take a holy bath in the Ganges. He prayed to Lord Shiva at Sirkazhi to bless him to go to Kasi. Shiva appeared to Sambandar and told him not to go to Sirkazhi and that he would bring Ganga to Ithalat. Accordingly Sambandar came here and prayed to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva showed him the river Ganga in the well here. Sambandar bathed in it and his sin was removed. The temple was later built at Italam.
