Introduction

Thappalampuliyur Vyagrapureeswarar Temple is dedicated to lord Shiva, Located in the Thappalampuliyur village, Thiruvarur taluk, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. Thappalampuliyur is a small village located 5 km southeast of Thiruvarur. This is one of the 9 Vyagrapurams established by Sage Vyagrapadar. Here the Presiding deity is known as Vyagrapureeswarar and the Goddess as Nityakalyani. This Shiva temple towards the east, there is a big pool in front of the temple, but there is no direct way to go to the temple, the street goes behind the temple from which a small alley like a path on the side of the temple is the path to the temple.

Puranic Significance 

The period of the Shiva temple is not known but the current structure of the temple is Vikrama Chola period, the son of Kulothungacholan. The temple is said to be more than 1000 years old.

There is a story about Ambikai staying here. Ambikai, who was the worshiper of a Siddha who lived in Tenkasi-Kadayam area, turned into a girl child and played with her. Siddha was also happy to name her Kalyani. Once Siddha came to a wedding ceremony and she did not come as a child; after it, Siddhar also went to Thappalambuli in the last days after going through many trials and worshiped the mother and got liberated. Nithiya Kalyani; Those who want a beautiful baby girl can worship here and get benefit.

The Lord is facing east and has a cone-shaped mandapam on the façade, which houses the Nandi altar. The sanctum sanctorum is a magnificent Chola period black stone structure, the sanctum sanctorum houses Nataraja, Tenmugan Brahmin and Durga. There are sanctum to both Vinayaka and Murugan. There are two large banyan trees in the north. On the south wall are the Saptakannis. Lord Shaniswara Bhagavan is placed towards East. Such a structure is seen only in a few places like Tirunallaru where Lord Saturn towards the east is called ‘Anugirakamurthy’. In the north-east there are two idols of bairava’s and Sun idols in the santcum.
