Puranic Significance
- Age: Believed to be 500-1000 years old.
- Legend:
- Lord Varadharaja Perumal is said to have aided Saint Suchvasar, freeing him and his followers from the torment of the Asura Siravanasuran.
- It is believed that Sage Valmiki taught Lava and Kusa (the sons of Lord Rama) archery skills in this region.
- The Lord is also worshipped by Rama’s twins, Lava and Kusa, and Sage Valmiki is said to have had a divine vision of Lord Mahavishnu here.

- Temple Orientation: The temple faces east and does not have a Rajagopuram (a towering entrance).
- Size: Although ancient, the temple is relatively small.
- Deity Representation:
- The main deity, Varadaraja Perumal (Ooraga Perumal), is depicted in a standing posture alongside his consorts, Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi.
- He is referred to as “Theenda Thirumeni Perumal” because the Bhattachariars (temple priests) are not permitted to touch the moolavar (main deity).
- Rituals:
- A special Thaila Kappu (oil cover) is performed for Perumal every Karthikai Tamil month.
- Utsava Idols: The Urchavar (processional deity) is a Saligrama Vigraham called Prana Harthi Haran, also known as Kannoli Perumal, believed to help with eye-related ailments.
- Shrines:
- A small idol of Garuda faces the presiding deity.
- The Lakshmi Narayana shrine features Vishnu (Narayana) seated with Lakshmi and Vishwaksenar.
- The Srinivasa Perumal shrine contains an idol made of Maragadham (granite), depicting Lord Srinivasa with his consorts.
- Nearby is an idol of Krishna with Rukmini, and the shrine also houses Alwars (devotees of Lord Vishnu).
- The corridor features shrines for Hanuman (Swayambu) and the goddess Perundevi.
