Introduction

  • Salakkinaru is a well located near the Ramanujar Sannidhi, where Sri Ramanujar used to draw water for Thirumanjanam at the Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple.
  • The well is about 7 km from the Varadaraja Temple, in Sevilimedu.
  • This is the spot from where Bhagavad Ramanuja brought water for Varadaraja Perumal daily.

Puranic Significance

  • Ramanujacharya was a student of Yadava Prakasa but disagreed with his guru’s interpretation of certain texts.
  • A plot was hatched by the guru to kill Ramanuja during a Kasi yatra, but Ramanuja was warned by his cousin Govinda.
  • While fleeing in the Vindhya forests, Ramanuja was helped by a hunter couple who were later revealed to be Perundevi Thayar and Varadaraja Perumal.
  • Saddened by the missed opportunity to offer them theertham, Ramanuja vowed to bring water from the well daily to the Varadaraja temple.
  • The well is protected and opened during the Anushtana Kula Utsavam in the month of Margazhi.

Special Features

  • Ramanujar Sannidhi is where Ramanuja lived after renouncing married life.
  • Thirumazhisai Alwar, Kani Kannan, and Yadotkaari once stayed here during Kani Kannan’s banishment.
  • Ramanuja used water from the nearby Salakkinaru well for Thirumanjanam at the Sri Varadharajar Temple.
  • The temple is believed to be 1000 years old.
  • The temple faces the Varadharajar Temple, with its gopurams visible from here.
