Introduction
Ramanathapuram Ramanathaswamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Ramanathapuram, Mannargudi circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. Ramanathapuram is one kilometre south of Periya kottur. This Shiva temple is located in the north bank of the big lake in the centre of the town. The temple is completely a brick temple. Here the Presiding deity is called as Lord Ramanathaswamy and Mother is called as Lord Parvathavarthini.
Puranic Significance
The temple is said to be more than 1000 years old. It is called Ramanathaswamy because Rama, was installed Lingam and worshipped. Most of the temple site is occupied by government buildings. A huge royal tree grows at the temple gate. The Lord has a sanctum facing east and Ambika has a sanctum facing south. Connecting the two sanctuaries is a front hall with a Nandi facing the Lord.
Among the Karurai are Tenmugan, Lingotbavar and Brahman durga. Small Vinayagar sanctum is in the South-West and Valli dheivanai Murugan Temple in the North-West. In the north are Sundesar, in the north-east are the Navagraha Bhairava and Chandra. Ayyappan shrine is built along the wall on the south side.
